- Justinian updated the ancient roman legal code into the Corpus luris Civilis.
Economic Characteristics: In commerce, Byzantium was one the most important western terminals of the Silk Route.
Social Characteristics: There was controversy and religious division over iconoclasm.
Cultural Characteristics: There most important building is the Great Church of Haig Sophia or the Church of the Holy Wisdom, were council and imperial ceremonies were held.
