The Islamic World

Location: In the Arabian Peninsula lived the Bedouins, the natives of the area.
Political Characteristics:
1. after death of Muhammad, his community needed to appoint a new leader, giving rise to the title Caliph, meaning "successor". Thus the subsequent Islamic empires were known as Caliphates.
2. The “government” allowed the Jihad’s which Holy Wars were.
3.  Caliphs were successor to the prophet and had a lot of political power.
4. Also after killing Muhammad’s grandson, Islam split into Sunnis’ and Shiites’.
Economic Characteristics: Christian, Jews and Zoroastrians paid taxes if they didn’t convert to Islam; this made a huge role in the Islamic economics.
Social Characteristics:
  • Men had a superior role, they could marry 4 women.
  •  Women’s role was merely reproductive, plus they cannot go to the street without responsible men.
  • Also it can be said that they are fairly straight with their religions cause they pray 5 times a day, they are socially organized.
Cultural Characteristics:
  • The holy wars (Jihads) were developed.
  • They don’t eat pork and drank liquor.
  • On Fridays they all go to the mosques to pray.
